Nothing beats the buttery goodness of a homemade chocolate chip cookie! But sometimes you are trying to be good, or you have dietary restrictions that make a buttery cookie off-limits. Here is a great recipe for a healthier NO butter chocolate chip cookie. In fact, this recipe can be completely dairy and lactose-free if you use vegan chocolate chips. Nestle and Ghirardelli both make a non-dairy dark chocolate chip that is perfect for this cookie.

Not only does this recipe not use butter, it also doesn’t use any eggs. You might think this would lead to a very dry, odd texture to the cookie, but that isn’t the case. Without the butter, it is a more airy cookie and has a softer texture. But it will still satisfy that craving you might be having for a gooey chocolate chip cookie.

What You Need To Make this NO Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
  • Oat Flour — Oat flour differs from all-purpose flour in a number of ways. First, it is gluten-free, which makes this recipe perfect for gluten-intolerant people. It is higher in fiber than all-purpose flour. It is also better for people with food allergies since it is not a nut-based product. If you prefer, you could use almond flour or whole wheat flour.
  • Coconut Sugar — I’m using coconut sugar in this recipe, but you could easily substitute light brown sugar or even dark brown sugar for a deeper flavor.
  • Almond Milk — If you are making this for someone with a nut allergy, you could substitute oat milk or even regular milk.
  • Vegetable Oil — You could use another neutral oil, such as canola oil or melted coconut oil.
  • Chocolate Chips — Depending on your personal preference, you can use a milk chocolate chip, a semi-sweet chocolate chip, or a dark chocolate chip.
  • Granulated White Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Baking Soda
Step-By-Step How-To For Butterless Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Step 1: Combine the dry ingredients in a large bowl: flour, baking soda, salt, and sugars. Whisk to combine.
  • Step 2: In a medium bowl, combine all the wet ingredients, vanilla, milk, oil, and whisk.
  • Step 3: Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and stir to combine. What is nice about this recipe is you won’t need an electric mixer to combine, it can easily be stirred with a spoon or spatula.
  • Step 4: Stir in the chocolate chips. The mixture will be runny, not like a standard butter chocolate chip cookie dough, but don’t worry, it will set up in the oven.
  • Step 5: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using a small to medium cookie scoop, place the dough on the cookie sheet.
  • Step 6: Bake at 375° for approximately 8-10 minutes (baking time will vary). The cookies will start to turn a golden brown. When you remove themfrom the oven, keep the cookies on the baking sheet for a few minutes to let the bottoms firm up. This will also produce crispy edges. Then remove to a wire rack and allow to cool to room temperature.
Tips For Success

Tip 1— If the dough seems too thick, add an extra tablespoon of milk to thin it.

Tip 2 — The bake time will vary, so use 10 minutes as a guide, but check on the cookie at about 8 minutes.

Tip 3 — For a more chocolatey cookie, use chocolate chunks rather than chocolate chips.

Tip 4 — Make sure your baking tray is cool before putting the second batch onto it.
