Dare to Do Right Hangman Blanks

This classic game of “Hangman” is such a fun way to introduce or review Dare to Do Right in singing time this month! The goal of the game is to figure out all the missing letters as you sing.

Set up this activity by writing an underline for each letter of the phrase, “Dare to Do Right.” I’ve included a printable later in this post with 3 different hangman versions that range from easy to hard.

I also like to write out all the alphabet letters and cross them off as the kids guess. This helps the kids keep track of which letters they’ve already guessed. You can find also find a printable copy of these as well to save some prep time!

At the beginning of primary, start by reviewing the first verse of Dare to Do Right (lyrics here). If this song is brand new to your primary children, use this activity as a fun way to guess which song you’ll be learning!

After singing through the song, choose a volunteer to guess one letter. If the letter is part of the word, write the letter above the blank. If it’s not included, cross it off.

Take another guess or two, then sing through the song again. Continue guessing letters until you have enough letters to guess the entire word! If you have some children who guess the phrase early on, tell them to keep it a secret!

Once you’ve filled in all the blanks and solved for the phrase, sing through the song one more time and share a brief testimony.

3 Hangman Versions:

1. Easy: The easiest version of this activity includes blanks for each missing letter, as well as slash lines to indicate spaces between words. To make it even easier, start with a few letters already filled in!

2. Medium: For a little bit more of a challenge, use colors to indicate repeating letters in the phrase. It can be helpful for your primary children to see which letters appear more than once. This version includes spaces between words, but does not include any filled in letters to start.

3. Challenge: For a more challenging hangman game, don’t include any spacers! Your primary children will likely be confused as to why the letters seem all jumbled together! Once you have solved all the letters, use slash marks to separate the words. Can you tell what it says now?

Here’s an example of what this will look like with and without the slash mark. See how much harder it is to guess the phrase when it’s all bunched together?!

Extension Activities:

  • For a fun way to review, play a few rounds of hangman with key words from the song! Here are some words or phrases that you might use: “Dare to be true,” “Bravely,” “Kindly.”
  • Write out all the song lyrics on the board and replace 3-4 words with hangman blanks. Work together to solve for the missing words!
  • Do a class challenge! Pass out a hangman sheet to each class. Have each class race to solve the puzzle the fastest!
  • Add some visuals by drawing a stick figure on the board. Draw simple church items like a dress shirt, pants, shoes, tie, and Book of Mormon. Each time you guess incorrectly, add an article of clothing or accessory to your primary friend. See if you can solve the puzzle before he’s all ready for church!
