"Munchy" Signorelli, a retired Catholic school teacher and longtime youth sports coach, died Monday at home under the care of Niagara Hospice, following a battle with leukemia. He was 81.

Born in Penn Mary, he moved to Niagara Falls when he was 6 years old. He graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School in 1943 and served in the Navy during World War II as a seaman first class aboard the destroyer USS Everett Larsen in the Pacific. He left the Navy in 1946 and earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Ithaca College in 1953. While teaching and coaching, he received his master's degree in physical education and history in 1966 from the University at Buffalo. In 1985, while teaching at Niagara Catholic, he received the Most Outstanding Teacher award given by then-Bishop Edward Head of the Diocese of Buffalo. The lessons he imparted to hundreds of students over the years also made a lasting impression at home. "It's one of the reasons I don't throw like a girl," said his daughter, Angela 1 M.
