Georges Bizet’s famed opera character Carmen was first introduced in an 1845 Prosper Mérimée novella; Bizet’s opera was based upon Part III of the story. The story features Carmen, then a cigar-factory worker, and robber-turned-factory guard José Lizarrabengoa. In the opera, José becomes Don José; in both stories, Carmen is murdered in a jealous rage after Carmen falls in love with another man. (And people actually wonder why so many women picked the bear.)

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: “One” Of Those Books; Death In The Capital; It’s All Relative; Hodgepodge; TV Movies; Words In Jeopardy)

Despite five Triple Stumpers in the first fifteen clues, all three players’ scores were close at the interviews; Matthew had $2,200 to Allison’s $2,000 and Daniel’s $1,800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Matthew 3 correct 0 incorrect
Allison 4 correct 1 incorrect
Daniel 3 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Allison did a semester at sea when at university.
Daniel learned to skate in middle school and got into figure skating at Brown.
Matthew got to live at Times Square.

Coming right out of the break, Allison doubled up through the Daily Double, and that momentum carried her through to a lead after 30.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Allison 12 correct 2 incorrect
Matthew 6 correct 2 incorrect
Daniel 3 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Allison $5,800
Matthew $2,600
Daniel $1,200

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Around The Adriatic; Pronunciation Advice; Dinosaurs; Do You Know Your Ralphabet?; Pop Music; Tear U-S Apart)

Even though Daniel missed the best Daily Double ever, I 100% percent appreciate what the writers did. Allison went a little bit conservative on DD3, which meant that for the second game of a row, Matthew had a hint of a chance going into Final Jeopardy.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Allison 20 correct 4 incorrect
Matthew 10 correct 2 incorrect
Daniel 6 correct 2 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 13 (3 today).

Scores going into Final:

Allison $11,800
Matthew $7,000
Daniel $2,000

Daniel was the only player correct in Final, but the betting situation makes Allison your new champion! She’ll return tomorrow to defend.

Tonight’s results:

Daniel $2,000 + $1,998 = $3,998 (Who is Carmen???)
Matthew $7,000 – $4,900 = $2,100 (Who is Maris?)
Allison $11,800 – $2,201 = $9,599 (Who is lady [scribbles]) (1-day total: $9,599)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • It’s great when you know exactly which of your Twitter interactions inspired not just a clue, but a Daily Double. Sorry, Daniel. But the pronunciation of “Newfoundland” is a pet topic of mine.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Allison $11,800 Matthew $7,000 Daniel $2,000)

Matthew: If you bet between $2,600 and $2,999, you can still pass Allison if she covers and is incorrect and keep Daniel locked out for second. (Actual bet: $4,900)

Daniel: Bet whatever you like, though I’d keep a couple of dollars back in case Matthew goes all in. (Actual bet: $1,998)

Allison: Standard cover bet over Matthew is $2,201. (Actual bet: $2,201)
